Dial-Up Internet Troubleshooting
If your system is giving you consistent error
messages, is locking up on you, etc., the best thing to do is exit
out of the programs you are working in and reboot/restart the system.
Instability in your system could cause errors that rebooting will correct.
Insufficient system resources could also be
the root of error messages. Not enough RAM memory, free hard disk space or
corrupted operating system files can all cause system problems.
Always use the latest versions of all
dialing/networking software and modem drivers and web browsers. Software updates
for modems, software, and operating systems are generally available free via the
manufacturer's website.
Here are some specific issues and
solutions:
I cannot access particular web sites, and / or
my e-mail.
The web sites you are requesting may be
unavailable, may be too busy, or may no longer exist. Try clicking on the
"reload / refresh" button, or try accessing the web site again at a later time.
If you can get connected but cannot access e-mail
or web sites, you may have too many instances of TCP/IP or the configurations
for the IP, DNS, or gateway settings may be incorrect. Check the settings
which are outlined in your initial setup package in the troubleshooting area.
If you cannot access any web sites but can
retrieve your e-mail, there may be an Internet Network problem outside of
NU-Telecom's network.
I keep getting the message "dial-up networking
could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols..."
This is a common error when incorrect network
settings are entered. Double check all of your dial-up networking settings.
For help with this, please refer to the initial setup package and
troubleshooting guide.
If all of your settings are correct, simply try
rebooting your computer. Your system may have become unstable, where rebooting
will correct this problem.
Make sure you have the most updated driver for
your modem. (Check with the modem manufacturer or your local computer company.)
I keep getting an 'invalid login' screen.
If either your username or password are entered
incorrectly, you will not be able to log into the system.
The first thing to check is to make sure you are
entering them exactly as you filled them out on your information sheet.
Remember, your username and password are case
sensitive so be sure you are typing the information in
all lowercase letters. Be sure that your caps lock key is not on when
you are typing your username and password. Make sure there are no extra
spaces after what you have typed in.
Be sure that you enter just your username
as your login, and not your whole e-mail address. For example, if your e-mail
address is skyler@newulmtel.net, your username is just skyler.
Be sure you have the correct dial-up number
configured into your dial settings. The dial-up numbers may be entered like
233-4234 or 2334235 (either format will work).

I have a 56K Service but
cannot obtain this speed or I am getting connected at a slow speed.
56K modems are named after a theoretical 56K limit, rather than their
true attainable connection speeds. The FCC has limited 56K modems to a peak
speed of 53K.
Even so, connecting at 53K
would still only be attainable in a laboratory environment, as speeds are
reduced by several factors, including:
Normal connection speeds for
56K modems range between 40k and 53k, with most connections falling between
42k and 48k.
New Ulm Telecom's 56K modems
are the V.90 standard language. For the best possible performance from your
modem, make sure you have the newest drivers and firmware for your 56K modem
and are upgraded to the v.90 standard. (If you're not sure about this, check
with the modem manufacturer or your local computer company.)
Note on modems: Most
56K modems have had several software updates that fix any incompatibilities
that they may have been shipped with. These updates are very important,
since your modem may not maintain good connections without them. Even if you
have a brand new modem, you should check your modem or computer
manufacturer's web site for updates, since the modem may have been sitting
on the shelf for several months. Almost every 56K modem on the market has
had an update released for it.
Note on V.90 upgrades:
V.90 is a 56K modem standard designed to provide one common standard
solution for the incompatible 56KFlex and X2 modems. We highly recommend
updating your 56KFlex or X2 modem to the V.90 standard by obtaining an
update utility from your computer or modem manufacturer's web site. More
information on obtaining V.90 updates for your modem can be found at
www.modemsite.com or by visiting the web site of your modem manufacturer.
